       "This relationship is still not entirely proven. A J. Nicholas Holl is shown on the same ship records as a F. Phillip Holl. There are records of a Francis Holl, son of Nicholas Holl, in Lancaster Co., PA. Margaret, a sister of Francis Holl and daughter of Nicholas Holl, married Daniel Shaeffer and the Shaeffers also removed to Shenandoah Co., VA. The land description of a 1772 lease for Francis Hull mentions land "Joyning to Daniel Shaver." Nicholas Holl's property in Strasburg, Lancaster County was sold by his heirs, Francis Holl, Peter Holl, Nicholas Holl, Eve Ressel/Russell, Margaret Shaeffer and Chatherine Bower on June 28, 1785. Daniel Shaeffer/Shaver's will, probated in Shenandoah Co., VA, on March 7, 1808/9, mentions Peter Hull, brother of my late wife, Margaretha and Catharine Hull, sister of the same, both of Lancaster Co., PA.        "On August 24, 1750, a F. Philip Holl appeared on a list of immigrants on the ship 'Brothers' under Captain Muir, from Rotterdam, last from Dowes. He qualified (took oath of allegiance) in Philadelphia. In his marriage record, Francis Hull appears as Franz Philipp Holl, and in the baptismal record for his son John Henry, he appears as Francis Philip Holl. Francis left Lancaster Co., PA, about 1752, when he first leased land in Frederick (later Shenandoah) Co., VA. He was in present-day Augusta Co., VA in 1781 when he purchased land there from Cutlip Black. Francis Hull served in the Revolutionary War as a private under Captain McCutchen's Company, Augusta Co., VA (Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution' by John H. Swathmey, p. 401).

St. John's Lutheran Church and Cemetery, Middlebrook, Augusta County, Virginia, where Francis Hull is probably buried, where his relatives are certainly buried, and where Francis  is on record as member, etc.

       "There are a great number of records recording land transactions, marriage bonds, etc., in Augusta County. Francis Hull is listed on the 1801 roll of the congregation of St. John's Church (German Reformed and Lutheran). Most of the names of Francis Hull and his family are entered in St. John's Register from the late 1700s through the middle 1800s.

       "In 'Virginia County Court Records-Augusta Co. Land Tax Books 1788-1790,' compiled and edited by Ruth and Sam Sparrcio, Ancient Press, McLean, VA, 1997: "Return of James Ramsey for 1789. Francis Hull, 150 acres rate per acre 6/1, Total Amount of Value of Land 45..12..6, Amount of Tax at 1 1/2 p cent0..13..8 1/2." Francis Hull appears on the Augusta Co., VA, tax lists of 1790 (Personal A, p.12) and 1800 (Personal A, p. 11).

       "Francis wrote his will on February 1, 1806 naming sons Henry, Daniel, Frederick and John Hull and daughters Elizabeth Fulwider, Molly Hanger, Barbara Cook, Catharine Wiseman, and Susanna. He bequeathed to two sons, Henry and Daniel Hull, and three daughter, Elizabeth, Molly and Barbara "what is in their own hands"; he has the receipts from their own hands for it. He bequeathed to son Frederik "what is in his own hands." He left L30 to come out of his estate, to daughter Catharine Wiseman. To son John Hull, he bequeathed his smith tools, clock, stove, cows, sheep, and John to pay his daughter Susanna L30 to make her equal with the rest of her sisters. Susanna also to receive his dresser furniture. Son John was to receive axes, mattocks, hews, collars, chains, and all implements belonging to the farm. He allowed one tract of land which adjoins Runkle at the mountain to be sold and to divide the money between daughters Catharine and Susanna. Son John was to receive his wind mill and all his notes and bonds. As for cash, he has none; remainder, after debts, to go to John. Francis's will was proved March 28, 1808 and April 26, 1808. On April date executors refused and administration was granted to John Hull. On June 16, 1808 inventory of estate of Francis Hull was appraised at $124.90.        "Augusta Co., VA Deed Bk. 28, p. 547-June 18, 1796: Francis Hull and Margret Hull his wife of the County of Augusta sold to Henry Hull for thirty pounds, 126 acres bordered by Brown & Burden's Tract.

       "Augusta Co., VA Deed Bk. 28, p. 548-June 18, 1796: Francis Hull and Margret Hull, his wife, sold to Daniel Hull 215 Acres of land bordered by William McCutchen and Samuel McCutchen, Beverly's Manor, and Burden's Tract for the sum of sixty pounds."

        vol. 1, p. 520-- ' April 1793 (A to Q)-- We, the under named jurors for the Commonwealth of Virginia, present that Alex. Sproul did, on the 18th day of January last, in the county aforesaid, unlawfully make a forcible entry in the house and took possession of George Almarode, with arms, of which he was then possessed, and does continue to keep out the said Almarode to his hurt and damage. In witness whereof the under named jurors have set their hands and seals this 13th day of February, 1792. (Signed) Francis Hull, John Summers (et. al.)'

        vol. 3, p. 232-- 'Francis Hull appears on a list of titheables in 1781 in Augusta County.'

In a letter written by Marie Strevey Rodewald to Christine Christenson Wilken, dated December 2, 1941, Marie states:

       "You know Grandma Naugle and Aunt Julia both say that Mary Barbara Summers Hull prized a blue uniform with gold epaulettes [we presume American Revolution soldier's]. ...Grandma and Aunt Julia have both said it was a Hull's. It's not from the Civil War, I'm sure."
